When the Floods Come

As many of you know, California has been battered by rain and flooding for several days now. Roads have washed away, people are being evacuated, and cities are at risk. One of the most recent victims, however, was a Giant Sequoia named Pioneer Cabin Tree. Standing for over a thousand years, this tree has seen its share of storms. But in the 1880's, the base of the tree was carved out, forming a tunnel that people could pass through. Even cars, once they became popular, were allowed to drive through this ancient tree. In recent years, however, it has only been accessible to hikers on a mile and a half loop trail. Even though this tree has stood for over one thousand years, when the latest stormy flood came, it toppled to the ground, shattering on impact. It lacked the strength to stand because its foundation was compromised.

Jesus told a story in the book of Matthew featuring two house builders. One was foolish and the other was wise. In this story, the wise man dug down to the bedrock and began building from there. The foolish man, not to be trifled with such painstakingly hard work, simply built his foundation on the shifting sands. When the storms came and the floods rose, the wise man's house stood firm! But Jesus tells us what happened to the foolish man's house: "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it" (Matthew 7:27). What is your life built upon? Are you like the foolish man, building your house of faith on the sand? When the floods come, will you lack the strength to stand, and instead topple over, shattering on the ground as the Pioneer Cabin Tree did? Or will you be like the wise man, building your faith on the solid rock, representing Jesus? If you do, no matter how bad the tempest or how strong the winds, when the floods come, you will stand firm!
