Rest Awhile

Dr. Craig Carr has been sharing the results of his doctoral dissertation with us this week at our pastors' meetings in Pigeon Forge. His area of study was the principal of Sabbath rest and how it produces higher levels of emotional maturity and lower levels of anxiety in pastors who actually have one. According to Dr. Carr, the problem a lot of Adventist pastors face is that the job we have requires us to work so hard on Sabbath, therefore many of us never truly get a Sabbath rest. The challenge that he's giving us is to try to still experience a Sabbath rest each week along with some extra time with God on other days to help fill us up so we can continue to give.

I know this doesn't apply directly to most of you, but I believe there is a principal here that definitely can be applied. Jesus and His disciples, like many of us, were busy doing good things. They were preaching, teaching, and healing. Yet He told them, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat" (Mark 6:31). We can be so caught up in ministry that we forget to unplug and spend time with the One we're sharing about. I'm coming away from this week with a renewed commitment to spend time with God so He can fill me up, allowing Him to overflow for those around me. Won't you make that same commitment?

Learning to rest awhile,

Pastor Sutherland
